SCRIPTURE
Luke 14:12 Then Jesus said to his host, "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
OBSERVATION
Eating is habit we all have. Social eating (that is, eating with people) is typically how we eat our meals. We eat with family, friends, peers, business associates, neighbors and such. That's a good thing. I tend to organize many of my breakfast and lunch meals around meeting with people...and eating.
Jesus takes something we do anyway and presents another function that eating (socially) can accomplish: blessing people with no strings attached. Orient some of your meals around those who can not repay you, ever.
APPLICATION
I'm going to sign up to volunteer at Angels and Sparrows Soup Kitchen in Huntersville. I'm also going to continue to serve @ Urban Restoration. This past Thanksgiving, our church helped provide a sit down, candlelight meal for the close to 200 people who come each week for groceries. Most of them could never afford a meal like that. None of them had the means to repay. It was beautiful and we were all blessed.
PRAYER
God, thank you for blessing me with so much. I am rich. Thank you for giving me opportunities to bless others with what you've blessed me with: life and love.
